A rare observation happened this week at Picos de Aventura, when a sperm whale brought its food to the surface. We could see the cephalopod still struggling to escape the mouth of the giant. The cetacean probably caught the cephalopod at the bottom of the ocean, then he continued its meal at the surface of the water.
It seems to be a giant squid (Architeuthis dux). This squid is found at very deep depth and it is also the most known food for sperm whale. Sperm whales are deep diver and they hunt for these preys in the bottom of the ocean, up to 2000 meters deep.
This observation has been recorded for MONICEPH project! 🦑
