The giant squid

DNA analysis by @moniceph.azores confirmed that the initial morphological identification of a squid found by @brianskerry in the Azores while making ‘Secrets of the Whales’ was a giant squid (Architeuthis dux).

Rarely seen close to the surface this giant squid was found close to where a large male sperm whale which we had been tracking acoustically for some time surfaced.

Expedition was done on board of @song_of_the_whale / Marine Conservation Research in 2019.
